Olivia's Singapore Trip

At SATS I was shown around Terminal one, I was shown where the cargo is received in, shown some of the procedures for producing the Waybills.  I was shown the warehouse where the cargo is processed into containers and stored until movement.  After being shown around the warehouses and freight stations I went down for lunch in the cafeteria with some of the staff.

PSA – this was really cool, so many vessels in the sea but they are not all waiting to get into the port, most of them are waiting while some of the crew jump into water taxis and go into the town to restock some supplies.  I learnt about how PSA participates in 26 port projects in 15 countries.   It was interesting to see how they are always thinking of ways to improve and speed up things at the port.  For example I was shown vehicles that can stack two containers on top of each other for transport around the port. So one vehicle can transport four twenty foot containers or two forty foot containers.  They are not allowed on the road though.  I was told a bit about the IT systems they have in place, CITOS for the Port operators and PORTNET for the shipping lines & freight forwarders etc.  Included in the PORTNET system is the feature of checking what temperature your Reefer container is at.  So if you are nervous about your Reefer you can just log on and monitor the temperature of the container online.

At Singapore Customs I watched a video presentation.  I learned about their zero GST warehouse scheme, to qualify for the GST Scheme at least 80% of imports traded within designated bonded warehouses have to be exported.

I met MR See and Adeline from Vanguard, we went out for lunch and then I also met up with Adeline for dinner later that night.  They were both very hospitable and I enjoyed meeting them both.

SLA – was good, they showed me a presentation on what they do in their industry in Singapore, I was exhausted at this point of the day!  They gave me brochures on some of the courses that they offer to people in the industry.

On Saturday I went on a morning tour of the Zoo and had breakfast with the Orangutans!  The zoo was very impressive.  I caught the cable car over to Sentosa Island on Sunday and had a look around there before I had to head off to the airport.

And obviously I also made some time to have a look around the maze of shopping Malls!
